President’s Rule in Manipur has been formally revoked, paving the way for the formation of a new Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)–led government in the state. The decision marks a significant political development, restoring an elected administration after nearly a year of central rule.
According to an official proclamation issued on Wednesday, President Droupadi Murmu exercised her powers under Article 356(2) of the Constitution to revoke the earlier proclamation imposed on February 13, 2025. The revocation came into effect from February 4, 2026.
The notification stated that the President, acting on constitutional authority, has withdrawn the proclamation related to President’s Rule in Manipur, thereby enabling the return of a popular government in the northeastern state.
Following the revocation, the BJP leadership has cleared the path for government formation under the leadership of Yumnam Khemchand Singh, a former Cabinet Minister in Manipur. Party sources indicated that discussions with legislators have been completed and the new government is expected to take charge shortly.
President’s Rule was imposed in Manipur last year amid prolonged political instability and administrative challenges. With the restoration of an elected government, the focus is now expected to shift toward governance, reconciliation, and development in the state.
Political observers view the move as a critical step toward stabilizing Manipur’s political landscape and restoring democratic processes. The formal swearing-in of the new council of ministers is anticipated in the coming days, subject to constitutional procedures.
