Amdavad, India has today been formally ratified as the host of the Centenary Commonwealth Games in 2030, marking a historic moment for the Commonwealth Sport Movement.

Amdavad (Ahmedabad), India, has officially been ratified as the host city for the 2030 Centenary Commonwealth Games, marking a historic milestone for the Commonwealth Sport Movement. The decision was endorsed by delegates from all 74 Commonwealth member nations and territories during the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow.

India’s bid highlighted a compelling vision for the 2030 Games, centred in Amdavad, which aims to build on the legacy of Glasgow 2026, celebrating the centenary edition with scale, culture, and sporting excellence.

Cultural Showcase Celebrates India’s Heritage

Immediately following the announcement, delegates were treated to a surprise cultural performance featuring 20 Garba dancers and 30 Indian dhol drummers. The energetic display, led by members of Glasgow’s Indian community and participants from other Commonwealth countries, offered a vibrant glimpse into the heritage and festive spirit athletes and fans can expect in Amdavad.

Garba, a traditional dance originating from Gujarat, symbolised unity in diversity, connecting the Glasgow 2026 Games to the Centenary edition in 2030.

Reflections on the Milestone

The first Commonwealth Games were held in 1930 in Hamilton, Canada. At the most recent edition in Birmingham 2022, Australia topped the medal tally, followed by England, Canada, India, and New Zealand.

Dr. Donald Rukare, President of Commonwealth Sport, said:

“This is the start of a new golden era for Commonwealth Sport. After a ‘Games reset’, we head to Glasgow 2026 in fantastic shape and set our sights on Amdavad 2030 for a special Centenary edition. India brings scale, youth, ambition, rich culture, enormous sporting passion, and relevance. We also see strong interest from nations for hosting 2034 and beyond. The next century of Commonwealth Games starts in good health.”

Dr. P.T. Usha, President of the Commonwealth Games Association of India, added:

“We are deeply honoured by the trust shown by Commonwealth Sport. The 2030 Games will not only celebrate a hundred years of the Commonwealth Movement but also lay the foundation for the next century, bringing together athletes, communities, and cultures in a spirit of friendship and progress.”
