Lok Sabha Adjourned After Nishikant Dubey’s Remarks; Chair Steps In
The Lok Sabha was adjourned on Wednesday until 5 pm after BJP MP Nishikant Dubey made a series of contentious remarks targeting the Congress party and members of the Nehru-Gandhi family, prompting repeated interventions from the Chair.
The disruption occurred during the debate on the President’s Address, against the backdrop of an ongoing confrontation between the Treasury and Opposition benches. Tensions have been high since Congress leader Rahul Gandhi earlier this week attempted to quote from an unpublished book by former Army chief General M M Naravane, an act objected to by the ruling party.
Participating in the debate around 2 pm, Dubey accused the Congress and the Gandhi family of what he described as “aiyyashi, makkari and bhrashtachar” (debauchery, trickery, and corruption). He claimed that several published books contained allegations against the party and its leadership, contrasting them with the unpublished work referenced by the Opposition.
“There is a discussion on books going on here, on a book that has never been published. I want to tell the House about books which are full of the Congress family’s gaddari, makkari, bhrashtachar and aiyyashi. And these are all published books,” Dubey said.
His remarks triggered strong objections from Opposition members, leading to repeated appeals by the presiding officer for restraint and adherence to parliamentary decorum. As disruptions continued despite the Chair’s interventions, the House was adjourned.
The incident underscores the intensifying political sparring in Parliament during the ongoing Budget Session, with debates frequently marked by sharp exchanges between the government and the Opposition.
