Chief Minister lays foundation stone for Sri Venkateswara Temple expansion featuring Maha Rajagopuram and mandapams in Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh.
Foundation ceremony held for expansion works at Andhra Pradesh capital’s Lord Venkateswara temple in Amaravati.

Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh: A major infrastructure upgrade is set to begin at the Sri Venkateshwara Swamy Temple, bringing renewed momentum to one of the region’s most significant spiritual landmarks.

On Thursday, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu will preside over the foundation stone laying ceremony, officially inaugurating the temple’s two-phase expansion plan, estimated at ₹260 crore.

What the Expansion Plan Includes

The development will take place in two structured phases:

Phase I – ₹140 Crore

The first phase focuses on core temple structures and boundary enhancement, with works valued at ₹140 crore starting today.

  • Temple compound wall – ₹92 crore (around the full perimeter)

  • Maha Rajagopuram (7-storeyed), along with: Arjita Seva Mandapam, Mirror Mandapam, Vahana Mandapam, Ratha Mandapam, Anjaneya Swamy Temple, Pushkarini (temple tank), cut-stone flooring, and stone-based temple flooring – ₹48 crore

  • Cut-stone flooring inside the campus and surroundings is also part of this stage.

This phase prioritises spiritual experience, heritage architecture, and safety for devotees.

Phase II – ₹120 Crore

The second development cycle focuses on pilgrim amenities and civic connectivity:

  • Mada streets surrounding the temple

  • Approach & access roads

  • Annadanam complex (food distribution centre)

  • Pilgrim rest house

  • Priest and staff residential quarters

  • Administrative building

  • Meditation and spiritual hall

  • Dedicated parking and vehicle bays

This stage ensures long-term functionality for a growing pilgrim footprint.

Project Plans That Pre-Date 2019

The temple’s vision was initially shaped by the earlier Telugu Desam Party government before 2019, with intentions to build a grand Venkateswara shrine inspired by Tirumala’s revered model.

For this, 25.417 acres of land along the Krishna River Basin, near the riverfront, had been allocated — including a total of 25.417 acres (approx.) along the Krishna river stretch.

What Happened After 2019?

Following a government transition after 2019, the previous YSR Congress Party administration:

  • Reduced the originally allocated temple land

  • Cancelled the planned expansion and development works

This disruption impacted temple infrastructure timelines and halted tendering processes.

Plans Revived Under the New Coalition Government

With the formation of the new coalition government in Andhra Pradesh, expansion work at the temple has now been:

  • Officially revived

  • Placed back into project execution mode

  • Tendering and procurement to follow soon for later phases

Devotee services, infrastructure design, and funding approvals are now moving forward again in a phased, planned manner.

What Comes Next?

  • Fourth-phase works will enter tendering soon

  • Administrative and construction bids to open shortly

  • Multi-phase execution will continue without seasonal pause, ensuring ongoing monitoring and project continuity

Closing Note

The foundation ceremony today stands as a significant milestone for heritage temple development in a planned capital city, marking a strong return to infrastructure growth, spiritual accessibility, and public confidence in temple revival efforts. This expansion ensures devotees receive not just grand architecture but essential services, dignity, safety, and continuity of faith.
